Chapter 8

Memories

Ascendary continued to fly over Marianne and Duke.
Attentively, the Griffin probed the surroundings for danger.
Marianne looked at Duke, who rode beside her with a serious face.
When she accepted the assignment, she would never have thought in her life that it had come to this.
Her thoughts went into the distance.

3 years earlier.
"Marianne, Marianne!" shouted a petite woman in a white-and-red uniform.
"I'm here," answered Marianne, who was sitting on a park bench.
"Marianne. Athena is waiting for you." With a sigh, the petite woman stood before Marianne.
Marianne nodded. She walked beside Dorania.
"It is your graduation as Aranasera. Rejoice," Dorania smiled.
Marianne made no reply.
Shortly afterwards, Marianne faced another woman in half-armor in a small arena.
When a bell sounded, both women rushed towards each other.

Now
Marianne grabbed the left side of the torso, lost in thought.
A long scar was hidden under her clothes. An unwanted memento of Athena, caused during her last Aranasera exam.
Nothing, absolutely nothing had been fair.
Athena had played wrong, because she didn't like Marianne. She considered Marianne unworthy of being an Aranasera.
But Marianne defeated her. She had been prepared for these tricks.

3 years earlier.
Marianne, as always, secretly left the fortress of the Aranasera at night.
It was the night before the last test.
She walked through the forest. She was nervous, because she didn't think she had much chance of winning.
Athena did not like her, considered her unworthy, because in her eyes she was not a true contender, because Marianne was a foundling.
She was found in front of the fortress and the Aranasera had raised her.
"Greetings," said a calm voice next to her.
Marianne was frightened. She moved away to the side and got into a fighting position.
"Very gently. I'm not a danger." In front of Marianne stood a figure. The darkness protected his face.
"Who are you and what do you want?" asked Marianne.
"Who I am is uninteresting. I'm here to help you," said the figure.
"To help me?" Marianne was confused.
"That's right. Listen to me," said the figure.

Now
Marianne remembered how the figure told her about Athena's tricks and practiced a corresponding counterattack with her.
The stranger was right. Athena tried and Marianne countered. However, she was a bit inattentive and the price was the scar.
But she had won and that counted.
Strange that she had to think about it right now.
Athena still managed to drive Marianne out of the fortress, and since then she has been on her own.
She had never seen the stranger again. Nor did she know why he had helped her.
Duke's voice brought her back to reality.
"It's the INQUEST! How did they find us so quickly?"
Everything in Marianne tensed up. They had no chance against the ship.

*

Cecile stood on the deck of the INQUEST and looked very satisfied.
HE had been right. They approached the fugitives.
Previously, when they wanted to leave the small village, they met a man.
He introduced himself as a hunter.
A hunter who specialized in rare prey.
He knew how fugitives act and had a gift for finding them quickly.
His name was Danores Nyrosar or simply Danny for short.
Nobly dressed, with a sword at his side, he offered his services.
Cecile was fascinated by Danny, while Dexter remained skeptical.
Danny pointed in the direction and after a short time they saw the fugitives.
The INQUEST went into descent and was ready to attack.
